For this activity students connect characters to songs, come up with a song that represents the entire novel, and explain their choices.
I’ve used this activity towards the end of the novel and as a culmination activity. Students enjoy using their music to connect to the novel and they do an excellent job discussing why they think their song is best, etc. The conversation alone really reinforces the students’ understanding of character traits.
For the most part, this activity can be completed independently – allowing you to work with students who need catching up, more help comprehending, etc.
