To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter 5 Close reading activity Teacher Instructions

This is an EDITABLE common core aligned lesson that is designed to be used with Chapter 5 of To Kill a Mockingbird but could be modified to be used with any chapter of any text.

First, you will want to group students homogenously by reading level (lexile score, previous quiz grade, etc.). I typically group them in groups of four.

Then, you will assign a leader to the group. I typically assign this position to the student who is most likely to be off task. The exception to this is that for my lowest level group, I assign a medium level reader who is patient and is a good reader. This student will be reading out loud to the group the whole time so it should be a student who is responsible and willing.

Then, I give my highest level groups the “Group A” Cards, my medium groups the “Group B” cards, and my lowest level groups the “Group C” cards. Depending on the class, I may have a few Group As, three or four Group Bs, and one or two Group Cs. I have also included a blank frame in case you would like to add a fourth level or an extension task card.

I then give each student the assignment sheet with the discussion questions that they will be answering. All students complete the same questions. The only difference is the task card (style) in which they complete the assignment. This ensures that the assignment is differentiated but that all students are meeting the same standards.
