REVISION: I added a graphic organizer and a cover page; I also revised the file's fonts in order to make the document more accessible.
This project allows students to explore a literary theme by creating a collage of visual symbols and quotations from the novel. The visual theme collage is adaptable for any work's universal themes.
Students brainstorm various themes, and then select images that convey the theme conceptually. They cover a surface (11 x 16" construction paper) with the images. Then they layer the quotations from the novel on top of the images. The final portion of the project is a metacognitive reflection of the work students have created. Their thinking process and explanation of chosen images and quotations forces them to think about why they chose particular images and quotes.
I have displayed these in my classroom and have used the collages as springboards for writing literary essays about the novel. Students may use their own collage or that of another student when constructing a literary analysis of the piece.
This activity is highly adaptable for various novels and for technology. I had several students create digital collages and use Web 2.0 applications (such as Glogster) to create their project.
