Engage your students in learning about the ratification debate by having them create the debate themselves through writing out a fictional dialogue between James Madison and Patrick Henry. Using excerpts of the Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers, students will interpret these sources to participate in a paired activity constructing a dialogue through their own words as it might have occurred. This is a great activity to go along with a unit on the American Revolution or US Constitution as students grapple with the perspectives on ratification.
This product includes a lesson plan for the teacher, a dialogue scaffold with directions for students, two perspective sheets (one Federalist and one Anti-Federalist) with seven primary source excerpts each. To assist student comprehension, each excerpt includes a brief thematic introduction as well as guiding question.
