This is a lesson that I created to teach my students about the harmful effects of tobacco. I created a "lung" organizer for students to record information and facts that could be helpful in persuading someone from using tobacco products. This could be utilized with a science / health textbook, a power point, or any other resource you may have.
Students will then take the factual information that they have created and write a R.A.F.T. The students role will be to pretend that they are a lung. The audience will be to the human who is consuming the tobacco products. The format will be to write a persuasive letter. The topic will be to pretend they are the lungs writing to the human to convince them that they should not start or should stop smoking. They should incorporate the facts collected during their research / lesson to include in their letter. An example of a letter has been included with the purchase.
After sharing the example with students, allow them to work on their rafts. They should color and cut out the cover sheet. They could color one half of the lungs healthy and the other half to resemble diseased lungs. Their letters should be stapled to the back of their cover sheet. These can be used to created a hallway display or bulletin board in your classroom.
A rubric has been included that can be utilized to grade the students' persuasive letters.
This is a great way to incorporate writing into your science/health lessons. While keeping the students engaged and eager to write!
Thank you for considering my products!
