Having a hard time working with a student with social/emotional/behavior needs? How about a whole class with behavior concerns? What about that student you supervise where it seems nothing works? How about parents who keep asking you for data on how their child is acting in class?
I have spent 11 years working with both general and special education students with moderate to severe behavior issues in inclusion and self-contained environments. In all of my time teaching these children, I have found token economy systems with behavior charting, in combination with clear rules and classroom procedures, to be the best way to help improve their behavior.
A token economy is a research-based behavioral intervention for students with social/emotional needs. It has been used in interventions ranging from RTI to PBIS. In a token economy students can earn points for desired behaviors and lose the chance to get points for exhibiting inappropriate behaviors. Students then turn in the tokens for positive reinforcers.
Using a behavior chart is a way to keep track of behaviors, tokens, and the reinforcers used in a token economy. It is a way for students to get immediate reinforcement, rewards, and feel pride for moving up levels. It is a way for teachers and classroom assistants to collect behavior data that teachers and professional can use in functional behavioral assessments, behavior intervention plans, IEPs, 504 plans and during parent/teacher meetings. Behavior charts can be used to give parents a clear retelling of a student’s day and a way to empower them with data.
I created and fine-tuned my token economy behavior chart level system over the past 8 years. This packet includes two types of level 3 chart. This chart can be used in a level system or on its own. On level 3 a student can earn 2 points every hour; one for their behavior and one for completing their class work. They can receive bonus points for being polite, productive, and ignoring other student’s negative behaviors at any time. On the pages that have two charts per page, you are just using slashes to record inappropriate behaviors. On the pages that have one chart per page, you have an opportunity to record what type of behavior(s) the student is exhibiting and the time. You could also record the duration if necessary.
I included charts for the following school hours: 7:00 - 2:00, 7:30 - 2:30, 8:00 - 3:00, and 8:30 - 3:30. I also include a blank chart where you can write your own text on the last chart, so feel free to change the ways that students can receive bonus points. You can also write in your own times.
