This lesson is designed to spark classroom discussion celebrating tolerance, diversity, and compassion. Together with other anti-bullying programs and activities, these activities support character education for students of all ages.
Included in the PowerPoint presentation are the definitions of diversity, tolerance, and compassion. Several slides explore ways for students to promote tolerance at school, at home, and in our communities. Other slides were created to spark discussion about how students might offer solutions to problems based on tolerance, diversity, and compassion. Several slides suggest tolerance themed books to add to your character education library, and relevant websites.
Once students have viewed and discussed the PowerPoint presentation, they complete a worksheet based on concepts discussed in the presentation. The worksheet is formatted as a fill-in-the-blank activity with a word box included. A second worksheet asks students to write a persuasive note encouraging a classmate to be both tolerant and compassionate (see preview). Lastly, an editable "Star Student Character Award" Certificate is included to be presented to those students who successfully complete this activity.
This lesson serves as one resource to be used in conjunction with your Character Education curriculum; meant to be used proactively, or whenever events dictate a need for educators to reinforce that an inclusive classroom environment ultimately promotes student learning and achievement. In our state of New Jersey, the Anti-Bullying campaign devotes the month of January to this very important initiative. We encourage you to modify the presentation to fit your own unique needs.
