Using Peter Stillman’s ten qualities of a hero, students are asked to explain how Tolkien’s character of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit fits the concept of hero. First students are presented with a list and explanation of Stillman’s heroic characteristics. The teacher guide gives examples of how these characteristics apply to the hero tales that students should be acquainted with already such as Jason and the Quest for the Golden Fleece, the Star Wars sagas, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Tale, and The Hunger Games. Together the teacher and students can examine their characteristics of heroes/heroines in books and movies they know. After discussion, the students should be able to apply his or her knowledge of The Hobbit to prove that Bilbo is indeed a hero—even if he is a small one.
