Students write a descriptive essay about modern day troublemakers or "model" children, using Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer as a starting point. Students can choose to focus on one or do a compare-contrast.
The prompt includes a brainstorming chart to get students started. I generally make the brainstorming sheet due a day or two after the assignment and then give students another few days to complete the essay.
This file also contains a rubric that students can use as a cover sheet for easy grading. You choose analytic or holistic.
Update: Now includes an editable .doc version!
This essay is perfect for early on in the book. I used it after Ch. 6. It could easily be adapted for more advanced students. If I were using it in 9th or 10th grade, I would have students write a full five-paragraph essay and use at least three citations.
