This *UPDATED* Scrapbook Project is an engaging resource throughout your Tom Sawyer unit. Students can complete this tic-tac-toe style project during the bellringer phase of class or as a stand-alone project, eventually completing tasks from three categories: Recall, Create, and Analyze. Students are also required to do two creative writing prompts based on the novel. This choice-board style allows student freedom while still adding rigor to your unit.
You can use this resource in student notebooks or as a stand-alone. If assigning this in Interactive Notebooks or student journals, you can designate a certain number of pages for students to complete the tasks.
Here's a sample from each column:
Recall -- 1. List three superstitions. This asks students to simply recall a process (for example, undoing a witch’s curse) described by one of the characters.
Create -- 1. Draw and use a quote showing direct characterization. This asks students to base their drawings in textual evidence. They also practice MLA-style citation: “She had golden hair and blue eyes” (26).
Analyze -- 1. Two quotes that show indirect characterization using S-T-E-A-L. I taught indirect characterization using the acronym STEAL for Speech-Thoughts-Effect on Others-Actions-Looks, but you could change this prompt to reflect your method. Students practice identifying indirect characterization and analyzing its effect.

I’ve done this sort of project different ways, but here is one suggestion. Give students a “target” number of entries to complete each week (for example, four entries) and then award them a certain number of points as a “checkpoint” grade. This helps keep students on task during journal time.
This resource is included in my Tom Sawyer Unit for Interactive Notebooks!
