Tom the Train is a themed token board designed to tap into students' intrinsic motivation while reinforcing positive behavior. Unlike other token boards, this one is interactive and reinforcing in and of itself. Rather than earn tokens, expected behavior allows the student to lift cross guards and move Tom through railroad crossings until he arrives at the train station to pick up the passengers. The student can then earn his or her break.
I initially created Tom the Train to motivate and reinforce on-task behavior for a disengaged first-grader with autism. Because of its effectiveness, I used it with three other students, all of whom demonstrated marked improvements over baseline for on-task behavior.
