Your students won’t be able to stop reading 26 Fairmount Avenue once they start this book study! 26 Fairmount Avenue is the first of Tomie DePaola’s chapter book series. It is based on his own childhood and is filled with funny, heartwarming, and even sad events!
This book study packet gives students the opportunity to delve much deeper into the book and truly use their thinking skills. The book is a guided reading level N, grade level equivalent 3.8, and interest level 3rd-5th, so it is perfect for second, third, and fourth grades. This file includes everything you would want to do with this book. Print off the pages and bind for a large book study booklet for each student, make multiple booklets, or even print off individual pages at a time. Use the activities as formative or summative assessments, and as reading or writing grades. Use this book study as a whole class, guided reading groups, or in book clubs.
I used these materials with my 2nd grade students. I was amazed at their depth of knowledge after reading the book and completing the activity sheets. I taught my 2nd graders how to write a paragraph and they used this to write a summary for each chapter of the book. They created their own folder by coloring the house cover. This folder contained the character book, chapter summary book, vocabulary book, and timeline. They used their dictionary skills when looking up key vocabulary words from the book. They added new information to these booklets as they read. All of the activities have ample room for writing and picture drawing, which makes it extra fun for the students. My students especially loved writing about their dream house because Tomie moves into his new house. We even sent our letters to Tomie DePaola and received a letter and autographed pictures back from him! They will all want to read the other books in this series after completing this book study!

Summary from Scholastic Website: 1938 was a special year for 5-year old Tomie, because his parents decided to move into a brand-new house being built at 26 Fairmount Avenue. It's exciting to watch his new house be built, but there are all sorts of setbacks, like a flood, a fire, and even a hurricane! While Tomie waits and waits for his house to be completed, he begins kindergarten, goes to see Disney's "Snow White" when it is brand-new, and and spends lots of time with his fun family. Finally the new house is ready, and Tomie must leave his old neighborhood, and get ready for all of the new adventures at 26 Fairmount Avenue.
