Anticipatory Set (Pre-Reading)
Before introducing the novel, why not discuss the author? A half-page "author study" sheet gives students a quick glimpse of John Marsden and his background. Then analyse the book cover by making several predictions based on the style of the cover and what those styles could mean.
Word studies are an integral part of understanding the text. In this novel study you'll find a page where students can list vocabulary words (with 18 must-know words listed for you, like: patriotic, reconnaissance, surreptitious); a vocabulary sentence building worksheet; a vocabulary graphic organiser where students explore synonyms, antonyms and define the word; and a vocabulary word search.
Questions that make the student think in fun-to-answer worksheet formats for all chapters (1-22) and epilogue. Answer key provided, for a total of 19 pages of questions and 8 pages of comprehensive answers! Some question examples:
+ Why do you think Ellie needs to tell the story in chronological order?
+ What does Corrie's choice in future career say about her character?
+ "Paradise of Hell" is an oxymoron in the traditional sense. Can you create an oxymoron to explain the conditions of Wirrawee?
Dissect characters with a character "first impressions" worksheet; draw the character and their behavioural traits with a character profile; analyse character relationships/connections with the character web; and compare and contrast Ellie's and Homer's character traits - all in attractive worksheets.
Students can note down key thoughts, events and ideas of the story with the plot arc, not to mention summarising important chapters or analysing a specific event.
Who said that? What does it mean? Why does it matter? Students build a bank of quotes to analyse throughout the novel. In another worksheet they explore the denotative and connotative meanings behind some important quotes.
The learning has only just begun!
+ Students can now fill in the "key facts" worksheet, detailing such things as genre, protagonists, tone, motifs and symbolism.
+ 20 extra comprehension and understanding questions await those who are eager.
+ A three-level reading guide (literal, inference, evaluation and application) worksheet tests students on their understanding of the text.
+ Students also identify and analyse themes.
+ Did they like the novel? Here's their chance to fill out a single-sided book review.
+ Alternatively/additionally, here's a fun idea for your classroom - story cubes detailing the student's favourite character, favourite scene and favourite quote.
+ A fun crossword filled with review questions.
