A card sort is a wonderful way for students to use deductive reasoning, to formatively assess students' learning or to demonstrate understanding before, during, or after a lesson. It is a manipulative that allows students to "get physical" - literally. In this card sort, students are giving baggies or envelops with the "cards" cut into strips (you may want to use card stock and perhaps even laminate them for longevity and durability). By determining the number of categories and subsequent words that fit beneath each category, they can see the various levels and shades of tone that make the English language so rich. Make a game of it and rewards students who finish first with a prize. Enjoy!
