A word sort activity that can be used to teach Common Core ELA Standard 4 Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

Includes 25 tone words (10 positive, 10 negative, and 5 neutral) and student directions.

Part 1:
Students sort the tone words into 3 categories: Positive, Negative, and Neutral This helps students identify the connotation of the word.

Part 2:
Students rank the positive and negative words based on how strong or mild they are. This helps students identify the degree of a word.

This resource can be used with middle schoolers who are being introduced to tone for the first time, struggling high school students, or advanced upper-elementary students.
