Google Classroom Users: This themed product helps us to engage learners who, at this time of year, are easily distracted by the spooky thrills of Halloween. As a result, it has become a fantastic time to hit on tone and mood!
We use a very powerful strategy of exposing our readers to several short excerpts with similar plots and characters which allows the reader to really focus on the tone and mood elements of a text! This forces them to solely concentrate on the word choices that help them to sharpen their skills. It can be used as a fun way to have students self-check their understanding while also giving the teacher a quick, informal assessment tool without the hassle of grading!
Here's How It Works
Step 1: Students show a basic knowledge of mood and tone.
Step 2: Students read their first short passage.
Step 3: Students decide if the mood of the story is positive or negative.
Step 4: Students look at a list of keywords or phrases as evidence to support the mood.
Step 5: Students determine the mood.
After answering accurately, students can "Break Out" and move on to the next level where they will read a similar story line with a different mood.
There are four total passages to read and 5 locks to break out of.
Your students will love this form of tone and mood review, practice or informal assessment!
