In this chunked analysis activity, students are grouped together and given a series of questions to use while close reading. Their task while reading their assigned excerpt of the short story is to annotate and illustrate the short passage. The activity includes higher level questioning and differentiated instruction through creative and varied ways of showing understanding. My hope in sharing this activity with other middle school ELA teachers is to provide a fresh and fun way of assessing students' ability to comprehend tone and mood without a straightforward written exam. Happy teaching!
