This rigorous, two-part assessment breaks down "narrative" into three easy to understand categories; Diction, Syntax, and Imagery (which all make up Tone). Students are asked to identify important aspects of each subsection, and find support for their assertions from the text, via citation.
Afterwards, they are given specific instructions on how to mirror the author's style, using the evidence they gathered in the outline, in order to write an articulate narrative essay. This assessment is PARCC aligned.
This assessment is a template that can be applied to any text; you can slip it right into your existing plans, or send it home as a homework assignment.
