I created this test as an assessment after my 8th grade Edgar Allan Poe unit. In keeping with the theme of Poe, I chose three texts that all discuss "haunted houses" in a different way. One is a literary text, an excerpt from "Fall of the House of Usher," the other two are informational texts.
I used a practice PARCC during the entire process of creating this test. By doing this, I was able to include many of the PARCC question strategies - such as building questions off one-another and referring to textual evidence.
I ended the test with a 4-point writing prompt, again based on the PARCC model of using short writings at the end of the multiple choice section.
I have enclosed the answer key, which has not only answers, but the specific Common Core standard aligned to each question. Also included is the basic rubric you can use when assessing the short answer.
*Bonus* Use the attached Mastery Charts to keep data of which students master which standards. I print these and staple them to my kids' tests so they can see their strong point - great to use for data examples!!
This test would be a perfect final assessment for your students who have been learning about Author's Style, Tone and Structure OR as a practice test for students preparing to take the PARCC exams this year.
