This response journal focuses on the skills: compare and contrast, sequencing, cause and effect, problem and solution, and characterization.
This response journal is broken up into 5 sections (Chapters 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10) and each day is set up in the following way:
1. Before Reading- First, the students will be introduced to vocabulary Each assigned reading has 3-4 vocabulary words (with definitions). Next, the students will make a personal connection (text-self) so they can relate to what they will be reading.
2. During Reading- Students are told to be on the lookout for specific details to help them prepare for the skill activity.
3. After Reading- Students will complete an activity on that day's skill.
At the end of this activity packet, there is a creative writing activity for the students to complete. The students will choose at least three of the vocabulary words and write their own story. There is also a page for them to illustrate their story.
Included is a test that covers the following skills: characterization, cause and effect, sequencing, problem, mood, genre, setting, and recall. For some questions, students are required to prove certain answers with evidence from the story. I let my students use the book for this reason. (An answer key is provided for the test.)
