One of the purposes of the book is to foster a true sense of wonder in order that students can become creative, caring adults who are dedicated to environmental and community stewardship. As a former park ranger, teacher and parent, I have taken great effort to make sure that details are accurate while also make it clear that safety and appropriate wilderness protocol are important. Like any fictional account of surviving in the wilderness, the reader will learn from the mistakes of the character in the book.
Extension activities in the form of Discussion Questions and Creative Connections follow the story. A web-page dedicated to Too Far to Wander also includes these in a printable format. The activities would be of use to classrooms, outdoor leaders or families that want to build on concepts from the book.
