Included here is a description of the project, a sample, and a rubric, all written at the students’ level. Also included is a Task sheet for posting the work on a bulletin board, and the ESL standards with performance indicators. The rubric includes a checkbox to guide students through the steps of the writing process as they complete their work.
The project consists of students picking out a word they don’t know from a book, and using all of their reading strategies to figure out what the word means. Strategies taught include using context, prefixes and roots, cognates, and others. I find students gain a deeper meaning (and retention) for something they learned when they can explain it to someone else or put it in writing, as this project asks them to do.
