I use the Tools of the Mind writing program which is by far the best writing continuum I have ever taught. The program is designed so that each student progresses at their own pace. However, teaching 25 students alone makes it tough to check in on all my students before they start working to ensure that they are working toward their individual writing goal. To make my life easier, I created these mediator cards. I laminated each stage in a difference color to help me quickly remember what each student is working on. The icon also helps students to remember what they need to be doing.
Since I laminate them, I can write their name with a Sharpie. When they are ready to move to the next stage, I use a Magic Eraser to take their name off. Be sure to go over the card with each student before they use them independently.
This has been SO positive, that next year administration strongly suggests that the entire Kindergarten grade at my school (7 classrooms total) to use them.
