This resource is in color format as well as black & white format for more economical printing options.
This resource is an excellent literacy center activity and will provide meaningful practice for your students as they gain knowledge and application when categorizing higher level words. This resource is plenty challenging for L.2.5.a and L.3.5.b.!!!!
In this activity, students will use the categories of "appliances" and "tools" to sort familiar items onto labeled mats. 48 labeled picture cards are included.
Compared to other word concept sorting activities for CCSS.ELA Literacy L.1.5a which might use broad or general word concept categories such as “toys or tools”, I believe this type of activity will expose students to a higher level of critical thinking that is required by this standard. By promoting a more extensive use of a student’s reasoning abilities and evaluation skills, it is much more likely that the student will achieve the expertise that is necessary to successfully master a higher level of this critical thinking skill.
Even if decoding is a bit of a problem, students can use the picture cards to effectively accomplish the sorting activity.
Because of the large variety of picture cards, additional options for differentiation of instruction are possible if you choose to limit the number of picture cards to be sorted --to accommodate students who need a more manageable amount of cards. An answer key is included.
