In this resource you will find materials for letting students explore books from your classroom library. I like to give each student a stack of 5 books. I give them 1 minute to explore each book in their stack. So essentially 5 minutes to check out their stack of books. After 5 minutes I give them a minute to write the title of any books that they “want” to finish reading at a later time. Then I have them switch stacks with someone at their table. I usually say everyone pass to the left or to the right. Then I give them another 5 minutes to check out new books. I do this about 4 or 5 times. If you have younger students you might want to split this activity into two days. After they fill up their sheet they get to pick the one book that stands out to them and write it at the bottom of the sheet. I surprise them with this book as their fists independent reading book. Also this activity is great for talking about what they notice about the books, it informs you about what kind of readers you have, as well as what they like to read. The kids love this and it keeps them wondering what books they will get next.
