Typically before every lesson I teach, I plan some sort of
game to practice the skill in which we will be applying to our
reading activity of the day. I’ve found this to not only be successful for engaging my students, but also gives me a chance to informally assess my students’ understanding of the topic.
Both the light-bulb activity and relay race strips are main idea matching activities. The only difference is that the light bulbs are strictly main idea and supporting details, while the relay requires students to decipher the difference between a topic versus a main idea.
