Great for independent seatwork, or as a whole class activity ,this is a practice or review for students who have already been introduced to the concept of a topic sentence supported by relevant details. It contains three easy paragraphs, each with an easily identifiable topic sentence and details (evidence) that support the topic. Each also contains one irrelevant sentence to be identified.
The students underline each topic sentence with any colored pencil at hand, and underline the supporting details with their regular pencil. They do NOT underline the detail that doesn't belong. This isolates that detail as not pertaining to the topic.
Student instructions are on their papers. This practice/review is easy to grade, and provides a comprehensive view of topic sentence, details, and sentences that don't belong with a topic. A teacher answer key is included.
