This is a simple, but thorough introduction to (or reteaching of) how to identify the topic and topic sentence of a paragraph or short selection. (As so often happens, terminology changes, and in the case of Core Standards, concepts traditionally taught as "main idea" and "main idea sentence" have been renamed "topic" and "topic sentence". The terms are inter-changable for this lesson.) The lesson contains: 1) complete teacher instructions, including dialogue, 2) a visual designed to show these abstract concepts in a way that even the youngest students can understand, 3) student copies of the visual so that each student may follow along as the teacher refers to the visual, 4) copies of a simple example for the students to do with the teacher , and finally 5) a closing practice to be done individually by students to assess student understanding (teacher key provided). Please see preview to determine whether to use this as a modified first grade presentation, a solid second grade introduction/review, or a third grade review/reteach. Appropriate for all students with learning difficulties. I welcome feedback if you purchase this product.
