This is an inquiry-based lesson plan about topo maps. It includes lesson plan, suggestions for other ways to teach topo maps, a game, 2 practice handouts, lab instructions and handouts, concept map, and complete procedures. It is based around Hurricane Katrina (or another similar Hurricane), and why there was so much flooding in New Orleans compared to another city. I used Rochester, Ny, but included directions to modify it to your home city. Includes pre-assessment, post assessments, photos of other student work. It would be great to use in a unit on mapping, hurricanes, natural disasters, flooding...could connect lots of units.
In this lesson students assess prior knowledge about topo maps, have short instruction on topo maps, and then build 3-d models of Rochester, NY and New Orleans. They then "flood" them, and do a final assessment in the form of a game, and journal entry.
