Background: Topographic maps show changes in elevation over an area of land. Many people use topographic maps such as engineers, geologists, hikers and pilots. Contour lines spaced very close together represent land areas that are __________________. Widely spaced contour lines represent ______________ land areas. Contour lines do not cross.

Objectives:
1. Construct a cross section diagram showing the changes in elevation represented by the cookie island.
2. Construct a model using topographic lines of paper.
3. Label the geographic features on your island map.

Materials: chocolate chip cookie, napkin, pencil, ruler, drawing paper


Students will complete comprehension questions after completing their maps.
