Read. Think. Listen. Write. Do. Explain. Learn. It's all here- with this book companion for Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens. Enrich your reading experience of the book, with these writing prompts. This book is a wonderful book with brilliant illustrations; a Caldecott Honor book. Sleepy Bear learns a life lesson! The book is a great read aloud or might be read by the whole class or in a small group setting. The author's message is helping out and taking pride in your work. The book can be a springboard for discussions about good citizenship, self-esteem and learning a good work ethic.

There are 40 pages for readers to respond in writing to the book.

The pages include:

*comprehension questions

*ask and answer questions

*character study

*tops, bottoms, middle concept

*learning about vegetables

*writing about the characters and their actions

*sequencing and life cycle of growing plants

*retelling the story

*favorite part of the story

*rhyming words

*cloze activity

*self-to-text connection [a time when I worked hard at something]

Most of these pages are for Grades 2-3 and homeschoolers as they ask for a written response to show understanding of the story. All are short answers except one where the student writes about his/her favorite part of the story. There are easier pages for first graders where they learn about vegetables and read 2 sentences about the vegetable. They can practice their handwriting on this page by tracing over the vegetable name.

You might choose those pages that you feel are best suited to your students needs. And this book companion provides opportunity for diversified instruction in writing.

And this book lends itself to a great art project, as you know.
