Live Like a Paisano!
Using John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat as inspiration, I have created a worksheet for students to understand the implication of poverty and what it would mean to them to live with the type of limited funds the guys in Tortilla Flat did.
Students will use easy math to figure gross income for a minimum wage job and then figure taxes to come up with their net income. There are sections within the worksheet that require students to write in their State and a section where they will need to look up a website that will give information about apartments and prices for different sections of the city they live in.There is also a part where it asks students to figure a grocery budget and gas prices/car insurance/car payment. It gives students a foundation of what a budget looks like and helps them see what their earning potential would be if they didn't try to achieve anything beyond a high school education.
Hopefully this exercise will get them thinking about what it means to just "float through life" like the boys in Tortilla Flat do.
