These are original, hand-drawn outlines of a tortoise and a hare, available at no charge.
In my third grade class, students create their own shadow puppet fables. Most children are familiar with the tale of The Tortoise and Hare, so I use it as a sample.
These outlines of a tortoise and a hare are traced onto tag board, cut out, and used as master tortoise and hare templates to be shared by the class.
Students trace the master template onto black tag board and cut it out for their personal shadow puppet of a tortoise or a hare.
The simplest way to make an eye is to use a hole punch.
If students want their shadow puppets to have any interior designs, they may draw a simple shape or two. A responsible adult then cuts the shapes out using an X-Acto knife so light may shine through the template.
A Popsicle stick or pencil is taped onto one side for a handle.
Shadow puppets can be flipped around depending on what direction your students want their puppets to move.
To see what one of our shadow puppet scenes looks like, just scroll over the photograph. Students create scenery and props to go along with their fables.
