Description

Students will explore 4 types of totem poles and their meaning in a two page informational article written at grade level. They will also learn about 6 different animals and what they represent in the Haida culture (colour and black and white versions provided). Suggestions for a totem pole activity are also included.

DR4.2 Explain the relationship of First Nations and Métis peoples with the land.

b. Research traditional lifestyles of First Nations communities and peoples prior to

European contact (e.g., hunting, gathering, movement of people to follow food sources).

Manitoba: Grade 5

5-VH-011 Appreciate the Aboriginal, French, and British heritage of Canada.
