With the new focus on argumentative writing in the Common Core standards, I have turned to the Toulmin method to help my students organize their writing. This PowerPoint introduces the basic elements of Toulmin's structure and then demonstrates to students how to use this structure in their writing. Definitions and examples are provided for each of the following terms: claim, grounds/reasons, qualifications, evidence, warrant, backing, and counter-arguments/rebuttals.
This year, I used this PowerPoint with 11th grade students and found it to be highly successful. The students' feedback indicated that it really changed how they thought about argumentative writing and that it improved the organization in their writing. I would recommend this presentation for 11th-12th grade students, but it could easily be adapted for 9th-10th grade students as well.
