How does a story's plot advance? How do themes develop?

With this handout, you can have your students answer these two pivotal and essential common core questions.

Using this handout to track a complex character, your students can discover and examine how the author uses a complex character to create a theme or advance a story's plot.

Suggested use: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet (see how Shakespeare uses the star-crossed lover's actions and behaviors to advance the plot). Fahrenheit 451 (examine Montag's actions and dialogue to understand how Bradbury develops theme).

I used this document last year with my ninth graders to teach the suggested stories above. However, this document can be modified for any novel, short story, or drama.

Hope you enjoy it.

Best,

Moises
