This is a project that allows the kids to examine their own personal family history. I usually do this project along with my unit on genetics. Included in this packet are: Student instructions, project criteria and checklists. A note taking and data collection form, a list of traits to choose from as well as an extra credit opportunity that asks students to apply inheritance rules and "figure out" what their great-great grandparents genotypes. This is a great way to tie the entire unit together. But for me the most valuable aspect of this project is that it provides the students with clear criteria on completing the project and it facilitates many fascinating family conversations! Anything that gets my students speaking with their parents about biology is a great day!!!
