This CCSS aligned lesson plan encourages students to explore the characters, setting, and plot of a narrative poem in order to analyze and support their interpretation of the theme. With its rhythm and rhyme (and generally shorter nature), narrative poetry engages students.
This resource comes with teaching tips, suggested narrative poem titles for a variety of ability levels, and 4 student work pages. Through illustrating (great differentiation your visual learners), students will explore the importance of imagery to conveying theme. Students will also work on identifying textual evidence that backs up their interpretation. Depending on the piece you choose, this lesson will take you 2-5 days to work through.
Students find narrative poetry such as "The Raven," "Casey at the Bat," or "The Highwayman" very accessible. Since the structure is familiar, they feel more comfortable analyzing the author's craft, making it a great companion for my "Analyzing Author's Craft - a tool for multiple genres product." Working in tandem, these two assignments are great for preparing students to write a literary analysis essay.
