Based on Edward de Bono's original Six Thinking Hats model, this presentation introduces the White Hat, which encourages students to identify and consider facts only and the Red Hat, which both validates emotional responses and cautions their overuse.
As an introduction, this presentation will encourage students to think critically about how they react to situations. I have found it invaluable in the classroom and at home as a means of demonstrating how emotions can be either helpful or harmful. Asking students to "Take off the Red Hat, put on the White Hat and consider the facts" is an easy to grasp concept that can quickly and effectively de-escalate a situation. It seems people (young and old) often just need to realize they have a choice in how they react to begin using the hats effectively.
Next up will be Part Two, The Yellow Hat and the Black Hat: What are the Possibilities?
