Level A Traffic Jam Sessions will engage your students in listening, analyzing, playing, and reading rhythms containing ta, ti-ti, and rest. These 12 different rhythm sessions are thoughtfully designed so they can be taught and performed in a variety of ways:

Unison four-beat or eight-beat rhythm practice

Four-beat ostinatos, layered – two groups, each plays and repeats a different line at the same time

Four-beat rhythm canons – two groups play and repeat all eight beats, one group starting four beats after the other

Two-beat rhythm canons – two to four groups play and repeat all eight beats, starting two beats apart

Jam Sessions progress gradually in difficulty, and each session consists of three pages: (A) words and graphics, (B) rhythm notation with words/graphics, and (C) notation alone. Moving through sessions in ABC order helps build skills/concepts.

Using a projector during Traffic Jam Sessions will help you guide students and keep them focused. For composition activities, rotating drum circles, or teaching without a projector, print, and cut cards containing desired rhythm patterns. (The images print nicely in gray-scale or color.) Printed cards are great for facilitating drum circles. Multiple rhythms can be layered, and students can practice a variety of rhythms as they either pass the cards or rotate to different instruments. A detailed teaching guide is included.
