A positive way to reinforce behavior using green, yellow, and red stoplights. The action of moving down for warnings/misbehavior is not the focus of the chart in my classroom, but rather the act of moving back up to green after a negative behavior. The chart is a visually pleasing way for students to see how they are doing in the classroom.
In all the years of using this chart, rarely does a child show more interest in the yellow or red lights than they do the green light. Positive reinforcement of positive behavior goes a long way!
I use clothespins with each student's name written on them to place them on their appropriate colored light. I also laminate the print outs and use metal rings to hook each color to one another, making a hanging traffic light for our classroom.
