In this activity, students will solve multistep equations that include the distributive property or combining like terms. This activity can be used as review of the topic, practice after a lesson, or review before an assessment. Students can work alone or with a partner.
With this trail, students begin at any poster on the trail. Students record their work on the Trail Record Sheet (included). Students solve the equation that is at the bottom of the poster. The answer will be at the top of a different poster on the trail. That will be their next stop. Regardless of where students begin, they will make a full loop back to the poster where they started. Some teachers may refer to this type of activity as a scavenger hunt.
This set includes instructions, answer key, a student record sheet, and 3 trails (8 questions each) of different levels of difficulty to differentiate for your students.
*Trail 1: combining like terms OR distributive property, but not both; equations have integers only
*Trail 2: combining like terms OR distributive property, but not both; equations or solutions may include rational numbers (fractions and decimals)
*Trail 3: combining like terms AND distributive property; equations or solutions may include rational numbers (fractions and decimals)
The zip file will give you a pdf file of each trail to preserve the formatting or a pptx file so that you can modify the problems to meet your students' needs.
