This is one of my favorite resources to use when teaching about the Trail of Tears!
I begin the period by putting a fake Aim and warm-up question on the board to make the students think we're talking about another topic. I usually like to have a staff member from our office hand deliver this letter, but it's just as effective if the teacher hands it out. We then read the letter out loud as a class, as per instructions from the principal.
While reading, the students initially become excited about the possibility of foreign exchange students, but quickly grow disgruntled over the fact that they will have to give up their own resources for the "new students". After letting them boil for a few minutes, I reveal to the class that this was all a joke, but the feelings they are experiencing were similar to the Native Americans during President Jackson's decision to remove them from their tribal lands on the Trail of Tears.
