This is a fun assignment which I have used many times to help my students understand the SIX TRAITS OF LIVING THINGS. I have found it memorable for my kids, as it is visual, student driven, and they get to work in groups to share ideas. I have made use of this task for students in the late-primary, junior and intermediate grades in order to get them thinking about biological traits of living things at the beginning of science units. You can find a range of different task options in this package to suit the needs of your classroom grade level.
1) “ALL LIVING THINGS” prezi presentation - includes prezi file and link to an online version to share with your students
2) Teacher Instruction Page
This includes suggestions and examples of a more in-depth assessment task that incorporates group work, art skills and creating a classroom science board to show off what the students have learned together
3) Two different versions of a student notebook to help follow along with the presentation and take notes:
***A version with some areas left blank, in order to keep students engaged and challenged
***A version with all of the notes, etc filled in. In case you need to give a copy to someone who was away, etc.
***Both versions come in pdf and word forms. Feel free to edit the notes booklet if needed.
4) Two different Exit Ticket options, in case you want to do any quick assessments
5) A short worksheet based assignment
6) Assessment Rubric/Notes Page for the larger assignment option
After taking part in the presentation, students work independently or in groups to think about the six traits and how they can be applied to all living things. As a class you will work together to create a visual and informative exhibit on your classroom bulletin board. I have included examples of the creations I have successfully made with my students over the years.
***This task usually takes 2-3 classroom periods total, from introducing the task, mini-lessons/tips to posting the final product. I often mix this in over one week of class, but the package provides many options for you to make the task shorter if needed.
