This is a classroom simulation that puts students into the roles of slaves, slave traders, and slave owners. Students will experience all aspects of the slave trade and come away with an understanding of what it was like to participate in such a horrible system. This lesson features:
- Instructions to run the simulation
- Role cards from REAL historical figures who participated in the slave trade at the turn of the 18th century
- What really happened to these individuals
Caution: because this lesson uses stories from real individuals, there are descriptions of dehumanizing actions and sexual violence. I DID NOT invent or make up these actions; they were pulled from actual primary sources (diaries and memoirs). If you feel that these descriptions are too graphic for your students, I would encourage you to modify or delete these sections. PLEASE read them carefully as some are quite graphic. I chose to include them because they were true, accurate, and communicate the horrors of slavery. I would strongly encourage that these materials be used in the high school classroom only.
