This is a group inquiry-based project that not only allows students to explore the processes of transcription and translation but shows them how to use BLAST on the NCBI website. In this project, each group is given a different DNA sequence in which they transcribe and translate by hand. Then, they take the DNA sequence and put it through a BLAST program to see what protein (or protein domain) is encoded by the DNA sequence. Students then go further and study this particular protein/protein domain and what could possibly happen to someone if this protein/protein domain is mutated. Grading rubrics are included.
