This is a template for a model that allows students to physically follow the process of transcription and translation. Learners first transcribe the DNA strand onto an mRNA strand via the RNA polymerase visual. Then learners translate the strand using the tRNA via the ribosome visual. Ultimately students sketch the amino acid sequence in their notebooks.
For this activity I gave quick direct instruction on each process first. Then I showed a youtube clip of the transcription process, and had students model. Following we watched a youtube clip of translation, and the students modeled that process. After the learners had an amino acid sequence we discussed this was a protein and discussed the variety and necessity of different proteins in the body (and watched another clip on that).
This template (except the mRNA strands) can be printed on different color card stock and laminated for reuse. The DNA and mRNA strands need to be cut and glued.
