Product Description
Students will demonstrate understanding of transformations, specifically reflections and translations by completing a real-life problem. Students are asked to reflect the points on a basketball court, translate a basketball for the game-winning shot and choreograph a dance routine across the coordinate plane.

8.G.1, 8.G.1.a, 8.G.1.b, 8.G.1.c, 8.G.2, MP.1, MP.2, MP.3, MP.4, MP.6

A. You are the Athletic Director at ______________ University. The start of the basketball season is fast approaching and the court is currently only half painted! Using half court (y-axis) as your mirror line, reflect square DUNK, semicircle UN and semicircle AB to create the other half of your court. Label each point of your reflected image with a prime. Also include the ordered pair for your pre-image and afterimage. Remember to decorate and incorporate your school colors! Tip off is 10 days away!!

B. Your team is down 1 point with 16 seconds to go in the league championship! The referee hands you the ball on the baseline at coordinates (-7, -4). Through a series of translations, move the basketball across the court to score the game winning shot at the hoop (7,0). Each time the ball is moved label it with the next letter of the alphabet and describe the action that the player will perform with the ball. Also write the translation that occurred in order to get the basketball to its current postion. When you are done, recount the last 16 seconds of the game in complete sentences below (or on a spereate sheet of paper). You must use the words translation and include ordered pairs in your description but you will be graded on your basketball knowledge and creativity as well!

C. You are the choreographer of your team at _____________________ University. The opening basketball game is in 10 days and the Athletic Director has asked you and your team to perform at halftime. You decide to give your best dancer a 30 second solo in the middle of the routine. Your soloist will start at coordinates (-4, 2). Each time the dancer moves label the dancer with the next letter of the alphabet and describe the action that the dancer will perform. Also write the translation that occurred in order to move the dancer to his/her current postion. When you are done, recount the 30 second solo in complete sentences below (or on a spereate sheet of paper). You must use the words translation and include ordered pairs in your description but you will be graded on your dance knowledge and creativity as well!
