In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to investigate the effects of changing coefficients and added values on equations and their graphs using Desmos, a free, online graphing calculator. This lesson follows a P.E.E.R. format - predict, explore, explain, reflect - for math education. The worksheet can be given to students to initiate a self-led explorations of equations and their corresponding graphs as they undergo changes with respect to the x-value or the equation as a whole. Students begin the investigation by making predictions about graphs of given functions. Then, students will explore the same functions using the Desmos online graphing calculator to make adjustments to the variables, ultimately allowing students to explain their observations. Finally, students will make generalizations about transforming equations. This lesson allows students to build their own foundation for the topic before receiving formal notes on the patterns and generalizations.
