As a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), I think it is absolutely essential for us as professionals to teach our DHH High Schoolers about Post-Secondary Settings, both school/college and work. In order to prep teachers with "what" I think should be covered/taught and/or discussed, I have created a PDF File that lists 17 Transition Based Topics with a variety of ideas for discussion, activities and questions to be considered for each. Since transitional-based content isn't always a top priority in regular education curriculum, it is our responsibility as Special Educators to help our students gain access to this individualized and personalized knowledge and to point our students to the correct resources.
Some of the topics listed are: Scholarships, Agencies and Organizations, Terminology, Laws and Legalities and Self-Advocacy. In total, there are 17 different topics with ideas for each in a 5 page PDF File.
I hope that you find this document as resourceful as I have when it comes to identifying what topics that should be covered throughout the course of a Special Education Student's high school career. I've used it as a Teacher guide, when figuring out what items need to be addressed with each student's personalized needs. All topics may not be relevant for all students with disabilities, but generally should be discussed.
